Students query at the quarry

The following was submitted by Evelyn Moyano, third grade teacher at Parker Elementary School.

Who says rocks can’t be exciting? The third grade classes of Nellie K. Parker Elementary School found a way to make them fun.

The entire third grade class took a trip to the Franklin Mineral Mine in New Jersey. Although it rained, that never interfered with the students’ learning experience. Students were taken on a tour of a mine replica, followed by them entering different exhibit rooms to observe rocks, minerals, crystals and fossils. Lastly, students were able to pick their very own rocks to take home.

Prior to the trip students learned the basic fundamentals of rocks and minerals, which made them feel successful when their tour guide asked them questions.

Overall, the trip reinforced what the students had learned in science class and made it an experience they will surely remember.
