Concerns might ease with deflector
If installed, a new debris deflector at the bridge located at the intersection of Garfield’s Marsellus Place and River Drive would ease flooding concerns, particularly those raised by residents, businesses and commuters passing through South Hackensack. Bergen County announced plans that it is examining ways of completing a project there.
“Unlike the federal government that has failed to provide assistance, Bergen County is seeking ways to address years of flooding and debris that have impacted Bergen County residents living in Garfield and the surrounding towns,” said County Executive Dennis McNerney. “Our county engineers are looking at installing a debris deflector that will prevent garbage from building up at either side of the bridge support, which will allow proper water flow.”
Freeholder Chairman and Hackensack Police Capt. Tomas Padilla agreed that relief at that location is needed.
“I am confident that the resources and technical expertise that we are offering to the local authorities will ensure that further debris and flooding damages in these communities do not occur,” he said.
“Our No. 1 priority is to protect the lives and properties of our residents. These flooding incidents can cause grave consequences and significant economic hardship.”
The debris deflector would be attached to the center support of the bridge allowing debris in the Saddle River to flow downstream and help eliminate flooding upstream in municipalities such as South Hackensack, Garfield, Lodi, Rochelle Park and Saddle Brook.
“This is the first step to finding a solution to a problem that’s been neglected for years,” said Saddle Brook Mayor Louis D’Arminio. “The county’s proactive approach will finally help surrounding towns get much needed relief.”
Once the county secures a vendor, the Board of Chosen Freeholders will create a resolution approving the purchase of the apparatus.
