Teaneck police have arrested three adults and two juveniles in connection with an assault and robbery that took place on Cedar Lane.
The arrests were made after a weeklong investigation, said Teaneck Detective Lt. Dean Kazinci.
At approximately 9:30 p.m. on April 14, police responded to the area of Kentucky Fried Chicken at 646 Cedar Lane on a report of an injured male lying on the sidewalk.
The victim had crawled over to the store after being assaulted by five men in front of Amazing Savings. He suffered serious facial fractures and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center.
The motive for the assault was robbery, Kazinci said. The victim’s wallet containing his debit card had been taken.
Detectives investigating the case were able to identify several locations where the victim’s debit card was used. A video surveillance tape from the McDonald’s Restaurant in Hackensack revealed that five suspects used the debit card to purchase food approximately 15 minutes after the crime took place in Teaneck.
Hackensack Police detectives identified several people from the surveillance tape, Kazinci said, and Teaneck detectives secured a search warrant for the home of two of the adult suspects. On April 18, Teaneck and Hackensack detectives raided the home of Dashawn Lesane, 20, and his brother Mulijah Lesane, 19, on High Street in Hackensack.
Both of the Lesane brothers were arrested. Evidence was found at the house implicating their involvement with the crimes in Teaneck along with credit card fraud offenses in Hackensack and Paramus.
Later that afternoon, a 17-year-old Hackensack juvenile was identified and arrested.
Teaneck detectives interviewed both adults and the juvenile upon their arrest. All three provided confessions.
"The investigation revealed that this group came to Teaneck for the purpose of committing a crime," Kazinci said. "This was a pre-meditated event. It was their intention to locate vulnerable individuals for the purpose of robbing them."
Investigation further revealed that earlier in the evening the group approached two other individuals in the area of Votee Park; however, these potential victims were able flee on bicycles. The additional cases are under investigation by the Teaneck detective bureau.
On April 21, a fourth suspect was identified as William Eason, 20, of Newman Street in Hackensack. A warrant was issued, and Eason was arrested on April 22 in Hackensack.
On April 22, a fifth suspect, a 16-year-old juvenile was located in Hackensack.
The adult and juvenile each provided confessions regarding their involvement with the aggravated assault and robbery in Teaneck, Kazinci said.
The victim’s debit card was used in several other locations including Rite Aid in Hackensack and Foot Locker in Paramus.
The three adults were charged with robbery and aggravated assault. All are being held in the Bergen County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail with no 10 percent option.
The two juveniles were charged with robbery and aggravated assault and are being held in the Bergen County Juvenile Detention center.
"They were roaming Teaneck looking for an easy target," said Kazinci. "It was learned, through questioning that the goal of the group was to hit the victim so hard that he or she would not remember anything."
