An early morning blaze last weekend ripped through a two-family residence in the Fairmount neighborhood of Hackensack and displaced six residents from their home.
Fire officials have deemed the fire that destroyed the Anderson Street house last Saturday accidental. The city fire department ordered the building demolished later that day after it determined the structure was a total loss.
Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly before 3 a.m. By that time, the fire, which officials said was started on the porch, already had spread and engulfed the home. Department representatives said last week’s dry weather might have contributed to the quick spreading flames.
As attack lines were spread, six residents were evacuated from the house.
One woman suffered a broken leg after leaping from a second story window, and a city firefighter was treated at Hackensack University Medical Center for an injured back. The injuries to both individuals were not life-threatening.
The department worked throughout the morning, and the blaze was declared extinguished at 6:25 a.m.
Of those evacuated were Israel and Dee Anna, students at Fairmount School. This week, the school community united and formed a fundraiser for their classmates.
