Obituaries: May 2, 2008


Charles Cielo

Charles "Chuck" Cielo, 61, died Wednesday, April 23.

He grew up in Hackensack and was a resident of Maui, Hawaii since 1992. He was employed by Insurance Factors, Kihei, Hawaii.

He is survived by his son Shawn and wife Tunisia of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., a brother, Rick Cielo and wife Karen of Fairfield, two sisters, Barbara Ciccone of Saddle Brook and Patricia Zingone and her husband Joseph of Fort Lee; four grandchildren, Angeni, Shawn, Kiyana and Cheyenne.

A memorial service was held at St. Francis Church in Hackensack, NJ. Interment will be in Maui, Hawaii.

John J. Sproviero Jr.

John J. Sproviero Jr., 79, of Lodi, died on April 22.

Before retiring, he was a carpenter and a member of the Carpenters Union Local 15 in Hackensack. He was a former head usher and a former member of the Parish Council of St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Lodi. John was a member of St. Michael's Knights of Columbus in Lodi and a member of the Fourth Degree Assembly. He was also a member of the North Jersey Homing Pigeon Club.

Beloved husband of the late Angelina (nee Della Russo) Sproviero. Devoted father of John J. Sproviero III and his wife Kathleen of Fair Lawn, and Anne Sproviero of Lodi. Loving son of the late John J. Sproviero, Sr. and Anna (nee Scibetta) Sproviero. Dear brother of Victoria Reiss of Mass., Edith Bigica of Lodi, Edward Sproviero of Ramsey, and the late Frank and Andrea Sproviero. Cherished grandfather of Joseph and Daniel Sproviero.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Lung Association would be appreciated.

Wilbur Henry Carlson

Wilbur Henry Carlson, 87, died on April 15.

Wilbur was born in 1920 in Bristol, Conn., and was raised in Brooklyn and lived most of his life in Northern New Jersey.

Wilbur was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Hackensack and Grace Conservative Baptist Church in Nanuet, N.Y.. He was an active member of Kiwanis and Rotary. He served as a leader of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the Full Gospel Men's Fellowship. For many years he was a school board member in Park Ridge. He and his wife moved to Mesa, Ariz. in 1994 and enjoyed an active retirement.

He was the son of Pehr and Ottilia Carlson, who came to this country from Sweden in the early 1900s. He was the last surviving of five siblings. He leaves behind his loving wife, Gunhild of 63 years. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Peter in 1999. He also leaves behind his three sons, Roger, Paul and Donald.

Eleanor King

Eleanor (nee Jouan) King, 66, of Hackensack, died April 20.

Born in Hackensack, she lived in River Edge and Bogota before moving back to Hackensack six years ago. Prior to her retirement she was a waitress at the Cupola in Paramus. She attended Hawthorne Gospel Church in Hawthorne and was a member of their senior group. She was also a member of the Ladies Bible Study at First Baptist Church.

Beloved wife of Wayne King. Devoted sister of Judith Jouan, Elizabeth Greene, John Jouan, Martha Lambert and Katherine Jouan. Dear cousin of Marjorie Lund and Denise Gurtza. Loving aunt of ten nieces and nephews. She was also a friend to many.

Memorial donations may be made in Eleanor's memory to Hawthorne Gospel Church, 2000 State Highway 208, Hawthorne, NJ 07506.

Howard Reinert

Howard Reinert, of Hackensack recently died.

Beloved husband of the late Marilyn. Devoted father of Abbe and Yossi Rosner, Michael and Karen Reinert. Dear brother of Evelyn Britt and Jerome. Loving grandfather of Kristina, Hillary, Jason, Dara, and great-grandfather of William.

Services were held at the Jewish Center of Teaneck.

Walter R. Smith

Walter R. Smith, 80, of Hackensack, died on Saturday, April 20.

He was an Army Veteran of World War II. Beloved husband of Barbara M. (nee Messenger). Devoted father of Victoria Farhi and her husband Michael of Hackensack, David Smith of Virginia, and Robert Smith and his wife Maura Daly of Montclair. Loving Grandfather of Ben, Joel, Owen and Liam. Dearest brother of Madeline Elliot, Muriel Shelgren, and the late Bud Smith, James Smith, Grace Smith and Laura Moroney. Cherished brother-in-law of Charles Messenger.

The funeral service was held at the G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Home, 397 Union St., Hackensack. Entombment followed at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, Paramus.

William N. Dunbar

William N. Dunbar, 87, of Paramus, died April 19, 2008.

Born in Baltimore, he lived in Hackensack before moving to Paramus eight years ago. He served in the United States Army during World War II and prior to her retirement in 2006 he was a custodian for the First Baptist Church of Hackensack. He was a member, former Deacon and Trustee of the First Baptist Church in Hackensack.

Beloved husband of Dorothy E. Dunbar (nee Hobencamp). Devoted brother of Roland and Robert Dunbar of England.

A graveside service was held at the Westwood Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be made in William's memory to the N.J. Veterans Home, 1 Veterans Drive, Paramus, NJ 07652.

Donald J. Mauthe

Donald J. Mauthe, 77, died April 2 in Palm Desert, Calif.

He was born in Teaneck, graduated Hackensack High School and served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He also worked at Kearfot, Tiny Tim Race Way and Green Mountain Ski Shop of Maywood.

Surviving is his sister, Helen Hogan of Toms River, and his cousin, Anna Lionetti also of Toms River. Surviving nieces are Kathleen Winters and her husband, Larry of Leesburg, Fla., Carol Ann of Middletown, N.Y.; nephews Thomas Hogan and his wife, Colleen of Center Moriches, N.Y., Michael J. Hogan of Clifton; grand nephews Thomas Hogan and Jake Hogan of Center Moriches, N.Y., and grand niece Alison Hogan of Center Moriches, N.Y. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Mauthe in 2004.

Susan Allen

Susan Allen, 77, of Hackensack, died on April 17.

Funeral was held at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Englewood, Private cremation at Cedar Lawn Crematory.

Rosario J. Mannino

Rosario J. "Russ" Mannino, 92, of Hackensack, died on Thursday, April 17.

Russ worked side by side with his wife Vivian at Mira Pharmacy of Hackensack, a family owned pharmacy started by Vivian's father Charles Mignone and his partner Sid Ramer. They had met in pharmacy school when he was a senior and she a freshmen. They married in December of 1942 and were married for 65 years.

A graduate from Rutgers College of Pharmacy in 1937, he led a long and distinguished career as a pharmacist, exercising the highest standards of practice. Serving on the advisory board at Rutgers for three terms, he was chairman of the 12th Annual Rutgers Pharmaceutical Conference. He served as President of the New Jersey Pharmacists Association from 1963-1964 and continued to serve as President Emeritus of the Association. A member of the Association for more than 68 years, he made considerable contributions to the education and training of pharmacy students entering community pharmacy practice.

He oversaw the training of more than 25 pharmacy interns in the community pharmacy practice emphasizing community service aspect of pharmacy practice by his example and by his training of the interns. He was honored by the New Jersey Pharmacists Association of the establishment of the Rosario J. Mannino Award for Meritorious Service. He was instrumental in adoption by the NJPhA of its current Code of Ethics for Pharmacists statement. He authored Basic Pharmacy Practice: "Why the Schools Should Never Change, Welcome Trade in Pharmacy." He was president of the NJPhA Presidents Club providing advice and counsel to the association based on his extensive managerial and pharmaceutical experience. He also served as president and nearly all officer positions of the Bergen County Pharmaceutical Society and as chairman of the Scholarship Committee, over 25 monetary awards have been made to pharmacy students in the Tri-state area.

He was the recipient in 1988 of the Bowl of Hygeia Award which is a national award given to one pharmacist in each state for outstanding achievements in community service by a pharmacist, which was the first recognition of its kind on a national level. He also was the recipient of the Rocco Misurell Memorial Award for his outstanding service to his profession. Since 1981 he served on the Board of Directors and Director of Pharmacy Affairs for Interchem Corporation of Paramus. He was a member of Kappa Psi (Pharmacy Professional Fraternity), the Rutgers Alumni Association, member of the Knights of Columbus Trinity Council #747, Lions Club and a parishioner of Holy Trinity R.C. Church in Hackensack.

Beloved husband of the late Vivian J. (nee Mignone). Devoted father of William Mannino and his wife Hope of Milford, Penn. and Ronald Mannino and his wife Suzanne of Wyckoff. Cherished Grandfather of Scott and Theresa Mannino, Lisa Mannino and Robert Mannino. Dearest brother of Ange Pellegrino of Bridgewater, Alfred Mannino of Arizona, Joseph Mannino of South Carolina and the late James Mannino, Frank Mannino and Marie D'Addario Russ is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held at the G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Home, 397 Union St., Hackensack. The Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity R.C. Church, Hackensack, followed by internment at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hackensack.
